Vintage and prestige Champagne covering both routes to the top of a house. Declared vintages carry a single year - Dom Pérignon 2018, Bollinger La Grande Année 2018, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 2014 and Pommery Cuvée Louise 2005. What makes a Champagne vintage

A vintage Champagne comes from one harvest, declared by the house only when it judges the year good enough to stand alone - typically three or four times a decade. Everything else goes into the non-vintage blend. That makes a vintage a statement about a growing season rather than about a house style, and it is why two vintages from the same house taste less alike than two bottles of its Brut NV. Vintage Champagne gifts covers the boxed versions of these same bottles.

Prestige cuvées and the multi-vintage argument

Not every bottle at the top of a house carries a year, and the ones that do not are making a deliberate point. Krug Grande Cuvée blends wines from many different years, some of them decades old, to build something no single harvest could give. Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle does the same with exactly three complementary vintages, an idea the house introduced in 1959. Both sit at the very top of their ranges while carrying no date at all.

The houses at the top of the Champagne list

Dom Pérignon and Krug are the two names most people reach for first. Bollinger La Grande Année is the Pinot Noir-led answer to them, and the PN series takes that further by building around a single year and a single village. Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is the Chardonnay counterpart, made only from that grape. Pommery Cuvée Louise and Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle complete the group. The wider Champagne range carries the non-vintage bottles from all of them.

What is a prestige cuvée?

The bottle a house makes when it is not compromising on anything - best plots, longest ageing, smallest quantities. Dom Pérignon, Krug Grande Cuvée, Bollinger La Grande Année, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Pommery Cuvée Louise and Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle are all prestige cuvées. Some carry a vintage and some do not.

Is vintage Champagne better than non-vintage?

Different rather than better. Non-vintage exists to taste the same every year, which is a real achievement in a marginal climate. Vintage exists to taste of one year in particular. Which you want depends on whether you are after the house style or a specific harvest.

How long should I keep a prestige Champagne?

They are released ready to drink and will hold a decade or more from there, kept cool, dark and lying down. Many improve for the first several years. Where a critic or the producer states a drinking window, it appears on the product page.

Why is prestige Champagne so expensive?

Time and scarcity, mostly. These wines come from a small number of the best-rated villages, are made in small quantities, and then sit on their lees for years - often a decade - before release. That is years of stock a house holds without earning anything on it, and it shows in the price.
