Stag's Leap Wine Cellars ARTEMIS Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley (2021)
The 2021 Vintage
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is one of the most famous names in Napa Valley, and for good reason: it was their wine that beat the best of Bordeaux at the legendary 1976 Paris tasting and put California on the map for serious red wine. ARTEMIS is their Napa Valley Cabernet - the wine that carries the house style to the widest audience.
Rather than come from a single plot, ARTEMIS is built from a handful of carefully chosen vineyards across the valley, blended together so each one adds something. It's almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon, with tiny amounts of three other grapes for depth, and spends just over a year in French oak barrels - mostly older ones, so the oak supports the fruit rather than dominating it.
The result is rich and smooth, with ripe dark fruit - boysenberry, plum and blackcurrant - alongside softer notes of chocolate and baking spice. The tannins are plush and well integrated, so it's approachable young but has the structure to keep. Serve at around 16-18C.
