Meerlust Pinot Noir, Stellenbosch (2023)
The 2023 Vintage
Meerlust Estate holds a profound legacy in Stellenbosch, yet their Pinot Noir is a brilliant anomaly for a region traditionally dominated by heavy reds. Cultivated on the coolest, sea-facing slopes of the property, this cuvée captures the striking maritime energy of False Bay in an elegant, finely tuned format.
The winemaking demands a highly sensitive touch to manage the delicate skins of the Pinot Noir grape. Following a meticulous sorting process, the fruit is gently crushed and fermented before a measured maturation in French oak barrels. This careful, Burgundian-inspired approach ensures the wood acts purely as a structural frame, allowing the bright, crunchy red fruit and complex savoury aromatics to remain completely unmasked.
Pouring a glass reveals an incredibly precise profile of wild strawberry, crushed cherry, and damp earth, all anchored by a signature saline minerality. It is an intelligently structured, highly expressive red that commands the table without overpowering it, making an impeccable partner for roasted duck breast or a deeply savoury mushroom risotto.
