Meerlust Pinot Noir, Stellenbosch (2023)
Meerlust is one of the oldest and most respected estates in South Africa, owned by the same family near Stellenbosch since 1756 and best known for its benchmark Bordeaux-style red, Rubicon. Its Pinot Noir is something different - a lighter, more delicate red in a region better known for big, bold ones.
The Pinot is planted on the highest, cooler block on the estate, facing south to catch the breeze off the nearby bay, which helps the grapes ripen slowly and hold their freshness. It's made gently, with only a light touch in the cellar, then aged in French oak - the oak there to give a little frame and spice, never to take over the fruit.
The result is pale and fragrant, with red cherry and wild strawberry, a little earthy note, and soft, fine tannins. Light on its feet and elegant rather than heavy. Serve slightly cool, around 14-16°C.
