Why Provence sets the standard for rosé wine

Provence has made rosé its main business rather than a summer sideline for a very long time, and the pale, dry style now copied everywhere started there. The colour is the visible part, drawn from a few hours of skin contact rather than the days other regions allow, but dryness is the more useful difference - Provence rosé finishes clean rather than sweet. The estates behind our Provence rosé

Château d'Esclans made Whispering Angel the bottle that took Provence rosé worldwide, and it is still the one most people arrive looking for. Domaines Ott has been at it since 1912, and its Clos Mireille is one of the eighteen estates holding Cru Classé status in Côtes de Provence - a classification drawn up in 1955 and never added to since. Château Sainte Marguerite, on the coast at La Londe-les-Maures, is another of the eighteen. Château d'Estoublon's Roseblood completes the list, all of it part of the wider French wine range.

What makes Provence rosé different?

Colour and dryness, and they come from the same decision. Provence draws the juice off the skins after a few hours rather than a few days, which gives the pale tone and keeps the wine light and dry. Regions that leave it longer make something darker and usually fuller.

What is a Cru Classé in Provence?

A classification drawn up in 1955 for Côtes de Provence, based on an estate's standing at the time rather than on regular retasting. Twenty-three estates were named, eighteen still hold the title, and none has been added since. Domaines Ott's Clos Mireille and Château Sainte Marguerite are both on that list.

How long does rosé wine keep?

Drink it young. Provence rosé is made for the year it is released and the summer after, and cellaring gains it nothing. A bottle that has sat for more than two years will have lost the freshness it was made for rather than developed anything in exchange.

Which Provence rosé should I start with?

Whispering Angel if you want the one everyone recognises. Domaines Ott or Château Sainte Marguerite if you would rather have the Cru Classé pedigree and do not mind that fewer people will know the name. If it is for a group, go straight to the magnum.
