Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Marlborough did something to this grape in the 1980s that no region has quite copied since. Very high sunlight drives ripeness while cool nights hold on to acidity and aroma, and Sauvignon Blanc responds to that combination more dramatically than most varieties. Dog Point and Mahi are both here, and both sit among the region's more serious producers rather than the volume names that made it famous - drier and more restrained than the style most people know. Napa and Constantia: fuller readings of the grape

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars AVETA is the Napa Valley version, and it is a different proposition - warmer, rounder and with more body than the New Zealand style, closer to what the grape does in Bordeaux.
