Marques de Murrieta Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2018
One of the top 5 wines of Spain 2020
Marqués de Murrieta was one of two pioneers in the production of Rioja wines, this bodega was established in 1852 and is proudly old-fashioned in its approach.
All the grapes are sourced from a 300 hectare Ygay Estate, surrounding the winery in the southern point of Rioja Alta wine area. This Rioja is a blend of 86% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha, 4% Mazuelo, 2% Graciano. Aged for 23 months in 225 litre American oak barrels and a minimum of 9 months in bottle before release. Medium to dark ruby-colored, it offers up a stylish bouquet of cedar, leather, tobacco, spices.
The story of the Marqués de Murrieta winery is inextricably intertwined with the history of Rioja wine. The winery’s founder, the Marqués de Murrieta, imported production techniques into Spain from Bordeaux. Located at the heart of La Rioja, the estate is home to Ygay Castle, headquarters of the Marqués de Murrieta wineries. Ygay Castle accommodates the whole of Marqués de Murrieta’s winemaking history, a history which laid the foundations of the D.O.Ca. Rioja Designation of Origin.
Tasting Notes
Flavours of ripe plum, red cherry and berries blend with spicy notes of licorice and sweet balsamic. The wine is silky and well balanced with rounded tannins and refreshing acidity. The long, mineral finish has notes of sweet spice and ripe plum fruit.
