Pisoni Estate Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands (2019)
The 2019 Vintage
The wine that made the Santa Lucia Highlands famous - Gary Pisoni's mountain vineyard, planted in 1982, in its purest single-estate form.
This is the wine the Lucia range orbits. Gary Pisoni planted these blocks in 1982, among the very first in the appellation, on granite-laced slopes at 1,300 feet - one of the highest, coolest sites in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The family makes essentially one wine a year here, a barrel selection from across the estate, vinified by Jeff Pisoni.
Hand-farmed and made with a high proportion of whole clusters, then aged in a good measure of new French oak - the structure that lets this wine age two decades. Wind and coastal fog hold the vibrancy in; the granite gives the minerality the Pisoni name is known for.
Expect crushed black cherry, violet and orange peel, deepening into baking spice, black tea, clove and damp earth. Powerful but not heavy - intensely focused, mineral, and built to last. Serve at 15-16°C, ideally decanted in youth. Pairs with duck, game birds, or a rare rib of beef.
