The Pisonis farm three of the appellation's most respected sites - Pisoni, Garys' and Soberanes - and the Lucia label is how that fruit reaches a sensible price. This Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay blends the cool, fog-driven minerality of Soberanes with the rounder, riper weight of the higher Pisoni slopes.
Hand-picked fruit is fermented with native yeast and aged in French oak under winemaker Jeff Pisoni, with gravity-flow handling throughout. The house style is restraint over richness - a textured, lightly creamy mouthfeel that never tips into butter, kept honest by bright acidity. It's the kind of California Chardonnay that rewards Burgundy drinkers priced out of the top white Burgundies: the same minerality and restraint, far less outlay.
Expect red apple skin, crushed rock and a brûléed-citrus edge, with white peach and lemon oil filling out the palate and that acidity carrying the finish. Serve lightly chilled, 10-12°C. Pairs with roast chicken, seared scallops, or a soft washed-rind cheese.
