Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5°, Ribera del Duero (2021)
Vega Sicilia is the benchmark estate of Ribera del Duero, founded in 1864, and Valbuena 5° is its purest red - Tinto Fino (the local Tempranillo) with just a touch of Merlot, drawn entirely from the home vineyard. Where the flagship Unico is built for power and a decade in the cellar, Valbuena is the estate's more open, ethereal expression, released after five years of ageing in oak and bottle - which is exactly what the "5°" in the name refers to.
The fruit comes off the estate's own slopes between 720 and 930 metres, on limestone-marl and colluvial soils, from vines averaging around 35 years old. Each parcel is fermented separately with native yeasts, then aged across a combination of French and American oak barrels and large wooden vats before the final blend is assembled and rested - a long, patient maturation that builds texture without ever drying out the fruit.
In the glass it leads with black cherry and blackcurrant, cedar, violet and a fine balsamic lift, with the graphite and savoury minerality that mark the estate. The tannins are fine-grained and polished rather than heavy, and the whole thing stays lifted and elegant. Serve at around 18°C.
