Pèppoli Chianti Classico, Antinori, Tuscany (2024)
Pèppoli is the Chianti Classico from Antinori, a family that has been making Tuscan wine for more than six centuries. It comes from their own estate in the heart of the Classico zone, and it's built to show the bright, cherry-fruited side of Sangiovese - a wine to enjoy young rather than cellar.
It's led by Sangiovese, with a little Merlot and Syrah rounding it out. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel to keep the fruit fresh and aromatic, then the wine rests mainly in large Slavonian oak casks - the traditional big barrels that soften the tannins without adding any obvious oak or vanilla flavour. The point is to keep the red fruit pure and unmasked.
The result is fresh and inviting: bright red cherry, a hint of violet, and a dusting of Mediterranean herb, with supple tannins and a clean, savoury finish. Medium-bodied and easy to drink. Serve at 16-18C.
