Le Serre Nuove is the second wine of Ornellaia, one of the original Super Tuscans and a benchmark name on the Bolgheri coast. It is made by the same team, from the same estate, using fruit from the younger vines - so it carries the estate's style and polish in a wine you can open now rather than wait years for.

It's a Bordeaux-style blend led by Merlot, filled out with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, grown on the marine and alluvial soils that give Bolgheri its depth. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted, then the wine spends time in French oak barrels, a quarter of them new - enough to add a layer of spice and polish without sitting on top of the fruit.

The result is smooth and elegant rather than heavy: ripe blackberry and dark cherry, a touch of cedar, tobacco and Mediterranean herb, with fine tannins and a fresh, savoury finish. Medium-bodied and seamless. Serve at 16-18C.

The 2022 Vintage

2022 was a hot, sun-soaked year on the Bolgheri coast - the kind of season that brings ripe, generous fruit and real depth of colour. What keeps the wine from feeling heavy is the estate's reach across many small parcels and the sea air that runs through them, holding onto freshness as the heat builds. The grapes were hand-picked into small crates and sorted by hand and by eye before pressing. The result is the rounder, riper side of this wine - full and plush, but kept lively by fine tannins and a current of freshness that carries the finish.
