Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley (2022)
Joseph Phelps has been one of Napa Valley's defining names since Joe Phelps founded the estate near St. Helena in 1973. The winery built its reputation on Insignia, the Bordeaux-style blend that became a benchmark for California Cabernet - and this Napa Valley Cabernet is the accessible expression of that same pedigree, drinking beautifully without the flagship's price or its wait.
It draws Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards across the valley, rounded out with a little Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot in the Bordeaux tradition. The wine is aged in a mix of French and American oak, part new and part seasoned - American oak has always been part of the Phelps signature, lending a warm, sweet-spiced edge alongside the fruit rather than a heavy toast.
The 2022 is Napa Cabernet at its most poised: cassis, black cherry and dark plum, with tobacco, cedar and a fine graphite thread running through. Medium to full-bodied, supple and balanced, it's built to enjoy now but has the frame to age. Serve at 16-18°C.
