Buena Vista Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Buena Vista is where California wine began. Founded in 1857 by the self-styled "Count" Agoston Haraszthy, it is the state's first premium winery, and its Chateau Buena Vista range marks the house's return to Napa Valley, where Cabernet has long been king. The name carries real weight: this is heritage you can put on the table without a word of explanation.
The fruit is drawn from Napa's benchmark addresses - sites across Calistoga, St. Helena, Oakville and Oak Knoll - giving the wine both valley-floor generosity and the structure of the hillside vineyards. It is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend rounded out with a little Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc depending on the year, aged in French oak that builds depth without burying the fruit.
In the glass it is rich and full-bodied, with ripe dark cherry and blackcurrant, a thread of cocoa and sweet spice, and velvety tannins that carry through to a long, smooth finish. This is opulent, generous Napa Cabernet in the crowd-pleasing register - serve at 16-18°C.
